Text Box: Three members of the River Bluffs Board of Directors attended the Missouri chapter leaders meeting in Cole Camp on Sept. 16, 2006. Dan Reed, Jane Frazier, and Celeste Koon went to the meeting which was sponsored by Audubon Missouri.
First, the group toured two nearby prairies. One had not been managed as a prairie for a few years and, as a result, it no longer resembled a prairie. A discussion was held about Text Box: the drastic steps needed to
reclaim the tract so it will help support Prairie Chickens and other grassland wildlife.
Participants also visited a second prairie in good condition and the contrast was evident. In a presentation later in the day, several speakers shared their commitment to maintaining grasslands in the area and private landowners told about their efforts to manage their lands as prairies. Local officials from Cole Camp Text Box: were present to tell about the importance of Prairie Chickens and their habitat in the area’s economy.
In another session, each chapter shared a success story, and it was notable that nearly all the Audubon chapters present were working on habitat restoration or improvement.
Other sessions included a presentation on an Audubon camp in Maine for chapter leaders, the updated web pages on the National Audubon Society’s website that contain information for chapters, and discussion of other Missouri developments.

Firearms deer season is November 11-21. Be sure you wear hunter orange if you are in the woods. You also should probably stay out of Conservation Areas.
