Text Box: In December, RBAS members were among more than 50,000
U.S. participants in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). In central Missouri and across America, observers participate in this annual all-day census of early-winter bird populations.
The results are compiled into the longest running database in ornithology, representing over a century of unbroken data on trends of early-winter bird populations across the Americas.
The first CBC was held December 25, 1900. About 18,500 individual birds were seen by 27 total participants. That year, they reported a total of 90 species.
In 2005, RBAS identified 80 different species within a 15-mile diameter area centered on the Capitol building. Most frequently seen species was the American Robins which numbered well over 100,000 because numerous, large flocks are roosting in cedar groves around Jefferson City.
Barb Brueggeman provided the list below which shows the species, number of birds and, in some cases, the location.

Great Blue Heron, 1
Snow Goose,	3
Canada Goose, 2932
Mallard, 2416
